What is tinplate and why is it used for cans?

An introduction to electrolytic tinplate (ETP), gauges and its role in metal packaging.
Electrolytic tinplate (ETP) is low-carbon steel coated with a thin layer of tin. The tin protects the steel against corrosion and provides an ideal surface for lacquering and printing.
Typical gauges for can making range from 0.15 to 0.25 mm, and the tin coating weight (e.g. 2.8/2.8 g/m²) is chosen according to the product.
The key advantage of metal cans is infinite recyclability and full protection of the contents from light and oxygen.
